Años de vida perdidos prematuramente (AVP) y su impacto económico debido al suicidio en Ecuador durante el periodo 2016-2023

Introducción: En Ecuador, la tasa de mortalidad por suicidio aumentó un 56% entre 1990 y 2019. A esto se suma que la pandemia por COVID-19 ha incrementado los problemas de salud mental en la población. Por lo que este estudio tiene por objetivo estimar la carga de enfermedad del suicidio y su costo en el Ecuador entre 2016 y 2023. Métodos: Estudio ecológico longitudinal que utilizó las bases de datos de las defunciones generales y las proyecciones poblacionales del INEC. Se estimó la mortalidad por sexo, etnia y provincia. Se calcularon los años de vida perdidos debido al suicidio y su costo económico. Resultados: La tasa de mortalidad fue de 6,68 por 100.000 habitantes. Los métodos suicidas más frecuentes fueron ahorcamiento, envenenamiento y disparo con arma de fuego. Se observó una mayor mortalidad en las etnias mestiza, indígena y afrodescendiente. Se estima en 218.013 los AVP y el costo de la carga de enfermedad fue de 1.221.518.243,07 de dólares. Conclusiones: El suicidio ha generado una gran pérdida de años de vida y un alto costo económico, lo que resalta la necesidad de implementar políticas de salud pública y estrategias de prevención.
