Abstract

The thyroglossal duct (TTC) is an entity that represents 70% of all congenital cervical anomalies, its incidence is common in pediatric patients, but persistence in the adult population only constitutes 7%. Histologically it is formed by flat or columnar non keratinized pseudostratified epithelium that could have the ectopic presence of thyroid tissue with follicular cells. We present the case of a 62-year-old male patient with a pathologic history of long-standing hypothyroidism who presented with an apparent cervical mass, which produced moderate pain and increased neck volume for approximately 10 years and which has been exacerbated in recent months. Exploratory cervicotomy + exeresis of thyroglossal duct cyst (by Sistrunk technique), procedure confirms the histopathological diagnosis of thyroglossal duct cyst + papillary thyroid carcinoma follicular variant associated with ulcerated cyst wall. The patient had a favorable postoperative evolution, she has not presented recurrence, neither thyroid nodules nor cervical adenopathies are evidenced.
