Abstract

The carotid body paraganglioma is a neuroendocrine tumor that arises from the carotid body, is very rare and frequently asymptomatic. Although it is a benign tumor, its invasive capacity and silent behavior, makes it a pathology that requires timely diagnosis and treatment. It is a highly vascular mass that carries an important risk of hemorrhage, which is why it is not recommended to biopsy. Nowadays, the radiologist plays a very important role, being responsible for the diagnosis and giving the vascular surgeon enough information to remove the tumor. We present the case of a 49-year-old female patient who consults because of a mass in the left side of her neck, not painful, that has been growing for about a year. Neck ultrasound and angiotomography were performed revealing a hipervascular mass located at the carotid bifurcation, consistent with carotid body paraganglioma.
